ASUS's flagship laptop is a beauty. Its aluminum body sparkles in the light, and its incredibly thin profile keeps it lightweight and mobile. The best part? It comes to you at a great price — about $1,200.

The 13.3-inch IPS touch display has a 3200 x 1800 resolution and a 178-degree viewing angle for times when you want to share video with friends. The display is powered by a Nvidia GT940M graphics card, so you can even enjoy some light to medium gaming.

Bottom line: For the best overall ASUS laptop, check out the ZenBook UX303UB.

One more thing: For a ZenBook without a touch display, check out the UX305UA model.

Why the ASUS ZenBook UX303UB is the best

ASUS has been putting out some fantastic laptops, and the ZenBook UX303UB seems to be a combination of the best parts of all its products.

It has a 13.3-inch touch display with a 3200 x 1800 resolution that delivers deep colors and an incredibly sharp image. It is plenty bright and has an anti-glare layer, so you can use this laptop anywhere you want, including outdoors on warm, sunny days.

Powering the display is a respectable Nvidia GTX 940M GPU with 2GB of DDR3 VRAM, which while not a desktop-class gaming powerhouse, is enough for some lighter games while you're out and about. The Intel Core i7-6500U processor clocked at up to 3.1GHz plus up to 12GB of RAM delivers awesome performance from such a small package.

The aluminum unibody is a beauty with its spun-metal finish and is only 0.7 inches (1.7 cm) thick. Despite all the hardware jammed in, it remains pretty light at 3.2 pounds (1.4 kg). There is a decent amount of ports in the ultra-slim body, including three USB 3.0, one HDMI, and one Mini DisplayPort.

The backlit keyboard has comfortably spaced keys, and the trackpad is smartly tuned and responsive to your touch. Add in a one-year accidental damage warranty from ASUS, and you almost can't go wrong.

VivoBook X540SA

ASUS VivoBook X540SA

Featuring an Intel Braswell quad-core N3700 processor with a clock speed up to 2.4GHz, this laptop delivers decent performance at an awesome price.

You're getting 4GB of RAM — more than enough for web browsing, word processing, and video streaming — and a 500GB hard-disk drive to hold all your stuff. The sturdy body is made from aluminum and remains respectably thin at only one inch (2.5 cm). Keep in mind there is a DVD and CD burner in this thing, and it has a handful of ports, including HDMI and VGA, to maximize connectivity.

The 15.6-inch display has a 1366 x 768 resolution and is big enough to multitask on — the lower resolution helps keep the price way down. This laptop starts at about $250.

Bottom line: For the best budget ASUS laptop, you can't go wrong with the VivoBook X540SA.

One more thing: The large screen means there's room for a full number pad to the side of the VivoBook's keyboard.

Best for gaming

ROG G752VS

ROG G752VS

Want a laptop with a new Nvidia 10-series graphics card? ASUS has you covered with the new ROG G752VS. You're getting a Nvidia GTX 1070 graphics card with 8GB of GDDR5 VRAM — this thing is ridiculous. Couple that with an unlocked Intel Core i7-7820HK and you have one insanely powerful portable gaming rig. And ASUS deployed some serious cooling to extract heat from the CPU and GPU.

The 17.3-inch 1080p (at 120Hz) display makes your games look beautiful, but if you want a larger screen, you can connect a couple of external monitors using a DisplayPort, HDMI or Thunderbolt Type-C port. This thing has G-Sync too! What makes this such a compelling machine is how ASUS has managed to pack all this power into a portable form factor. But at $2,339.29, it will hurt your wallet.

Bottom line: For an ASUS gaming laptop with the power of Nvidia's GTX 1070 GPU, go with the ROG G752VS.

One more thing: Plan for the future by upgrading the RAM — it should keep you set for years to come.

Best portable

ZenBook 3 UX390UA

ZenBook 3

The ASUS ZenBook 3 is the latest iteration of ZenBook from the manufacturer, sporting Intel's seventh-gen processors, a gorgeous design and build, as well as a stunning (yet only 1080p) 14-inch display. The company has packed this large display in the 13-inch chassis, slicing the bezels down to just 0.3-inches.

It's a little pricey, though. The new ZenBook 3 will set you back just shy of $1,500, which is substantially more expensive than our best overall pick, though we're rocking the latest in Intel processing power here.

Bottom line: The ZenBook 3 is a great all-rounder that offers incredible levels of portability.

One more thing: USB 3.1 Type-C is the future!

Best convertible

ZenBook Flip UX360CA

ASUS ZenBook Flip UX360CA

Many convertible laptops suffer from a heavy build and thick body — you are, after all, getting a tablet and notebook in one. The ASUS ZenBook Flip, however, remains thin at just under 0.5 inches (1.27 cm) thick, and light at just under 3 pounds (1.3 kg).

The 13.3-inch display has a 1920 x 1080 resolution and is powered by Intel HD Graphics 515 built into the Intel Core M3-6Y30 processor. Its 8GB of RAM is enough to keep things moving along smoothly while you're web browsing, word processing, or video watching, and the 512GB solid-state drive (SSD) will boot Windows 10 almost instantly.

The hinges keep your lid in place no matter where it is on its 360-degree radius, but they are buttery smooth as you open it up and bend it around. You're getting a tablet and a notebook in one package that starts at about $750.

Bottom line: For a convertible ASUS laptop with excellent performance, have a look at the ZenBook Flip UX360CA.

One more thing:: Audio by Bang & Olufsen delivers an above-average listening experience.

Best for photography

ZenBook Pro UX501VW

ASUS ZenBook Pro UX501VW

Photographers need a high-resolution display to see what they're working with, and the ASUS ZenBook Pro delivers. Its 15.6-inch IPS touch display has a 3840 x 2860 resolution — this is 4K, folks. The colors are fantastic and everything pops thanks to the deep blacks and high contrast.

A Nvidia GTX 960M graphics card has enough power for pretty much anything you throw at it, including multimedia editing. The combination of an Intel Core i7-6700HQ with a 2.6GHz clock speed and 16GB of RAM ensures this laptop won't get bogged down when you're in the middle of a big project.

A handful of ports ensures you can hook up all your photography gear, and the aluminum body will endure your time in the field. Despite all the hardware packed into this laptop, it is 0.8 inches (2cm) thick and weighs about five pounds (2 kg).

Bottom line: For the ASUS laptop with a 4K display, go with the ZenBook Pro UX501VW.

One more thing: Connect up to two 4K monitors for when you really need to get stuff done.

Conclusion

If you love the ASUS line but want to keep the budget down, check out the VivoBook X540SA. For gamers out there, have a look at the ROG G725 OC Edition — it's a beast. Those of you who want a convertible laptop should consider the ZenBook Flip UX360CA, and photographers or people who can't live without a 4K display will love the ZenBook Pro UX501VW. For the best overall laptop from ASUS, however, you have to go with the ZenBook UX303UB.
