You can definitely take this with your in your gear bag, but it's probably a better use case in a home office. The Surface Dock is Microsoft's official hub for the Surface Pro, and it hooks up over the Surface Connect port to expand the connectivity of your Surface Pro.

The Surface Dock gives you four USB 3.0 ports, an audio output, a gigabit Ethernet port and two mini-DisplayPort outputs for adding external monitors to your Surface Pro. The Surface Dock offers high-speed data transfer and the ability to truly make your Surface Pro a home desktop PC.

It's pricey at around $150, but it's the very best there is.

This hub is probably best for use at home or in an office environment. It's not specific to the Surface, so can be used with any other Windows 10 PC, but also acts as a stand so you're not running a cable across a desk to connect.

It uses USB 3.0 rather than the Surface Connect port, so you won't get the same data transfer speeds, but it does offer a host of connectivity options. You get a pair each of USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 ports, gigabit Ethernet, HDMI, DVI and separate headphone and microphone jacks. All going to your Surface Pro down a single cable.

It's also fairly well priced at $90.
