Chime in: What is VR good for beyond gaming?

VR has come a long way in the last couple of years since the release of the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift, and we're seeing many manufacturers jump on board, including those who partnered with Microsoft to make Windows Mixed Reality.

If you're enjoying one of the premier PC-based VR systems (or even the excellent PlayStation VR), chances are you have a large library of games from SteamVR, the Oculus Store, or the Microsoft Store. You might also have discovered some other uses for VR, like enjoying media on a big screen or taking advantage of unlimited desktops and windows for productivity purposes.

Other who haven't had a chance yet to dive into the deep end of VR might be wondering what exactly all the fuss is about since most of the focus is on the gaming aspect. Windows Central forum member drewsuruncle recently created a thread in our VR & AR Lounge asking about the point of VR, AR, and MR.

I am really having a hard time understanding what the big deal is with VR/AR/MR. Outside of gaming (which I think could be cool), and a few other niche areas what purpose does it serve? Obviously I haven't really used it other than about 2 times with my Idol 4s, and a google cardboard thingy. What am I missing? TIA.

It's a good question, and plenty of people have already jumped in to enlighten drewsuruncle. There are personal accounts of how VR has been useful, and it's all sparked a lively conversation. Whether you're also wondering exactly what this technology is for, or you have a story to share, be sure to stop by the forum thread and be heard!
