What Remains of Edith Finch is landing on Xbox One on July 19th, 2017 as part of ID@Xbox, it was announced today. What Remains of Edith Finch is developed by Giant Sparrow, and published by Annapurna Interactive, who is also responsible for bringing the upcoming RPG Ashen to Xbox One.
In What Remains of Edith Finch, you play as the eponymous Edith Finch, as she narrates her way through the memories of various deceased relatives. The Finch family believes they suffer from a curse, as every member of the family suffers an untimely death, save for a single person who continues the family line.
What Remains of Edith Finch received almost universal acclaim for its art, music, and unique story telling devices, which play out through explorative play and bespoke mini-games. It has been described as moving and bittersweet, and has been praised for its unique take on the narrative adventure genre.
Microsoft announced the news on Xbox Wire earlier today, with some comments from the game's creative director, Ian Dallas.
"What Remains of Edith Finch is a collection of playable short stories about a cursed family in Washington State. You play as Edith, who tries to figure out why she is the last one in her family alive upon coming back to the house she grew up in. As you explore the house, you'll find stories about each family member with its own unique gameplay and each ending with the death of that family member.""It's a game that touches on a lot of subjects: death, family, stories and what we leave behind, but more than anything it's a game about the unknown, about exploring something with no idea of what you're going to find. This makes the game a little hard to describe because the more I tell you about it, the less it's going to surprise you."
It's hard to talk about What Remains of Edith Finch too much without heading into spoiler territory, but if you're a fan of story-driven adventure games, apparently, this is among the best out there. We'll have to see for our selves when the game launches on July 19th, 2017.
