Microsoft rolls out fix for botched Intel audio driver update

If you recently lost audio on your PC due to an Intel driver sent out via Windows Update, Microsoft now has a fix.

Microsoft has shipped an update for Windows 10 PCs that should fix an issue that caused audio to stop working on PCs after installing Intel Smart Sound Technology driver version 09.21.00.3755.

The issue was the result of the updated Intel driver being sent to some PCs by mistake. After reports began surfacing, Microsoft posted a workaround that involved manually uninstalling the driver. The update released today as KB4468550 (via OnMSFT) will automatically remedy the issue for those affected who haven't already manually uninstalled the driver themselves.

From Microsoft:

This update addresses an issue where after installing the Intel Smart Sound Technology driver (version 09.21.00.3755) via Windows Update or manually, computer audio may stop working.

Once installed, audio should begin working again, though you may have to restart your PC once the update is applied.

If your PC is affected by the audio issue, you should be able to grab the update via Windows Update now. Alternatively, you can manually download and install the update through the Microsoft Update Catalog.
