New Surface Pro 3 firmware update brings Meltdown and Spectre protections

Not long after the Meltdown and SPectre processor flaws were disclosed in January, Microsoft began rolling out firmware updates for several of its Surface devices to protect against them. Notably missing from the list of updated devices at the time was the Surface Pro 3, but Microsoft is now rectifying that with a new update.

The update contains a single change and, like the other updates, it resolves "potential security vulnerabilities" related to Meltdown and Spectre. Here's a look at the release notes, as detailed on Microsoft's Surface Update History page (via Thurrott):

  • Surface – Firmware – 3.11.2250.0 - Surface UEFI – Firmware 3.11.2250.0: resolves potential security vulnerabilities, including Microsoft security advisory 180002.

According to Microsoft, the update began rolling out on February 20, so it's possible your machine has installed it already if you have automatic updates turned on. Otherwise, the security update should be available to pick up via Windows Update. Alternatively, you can grab the update and install it manually from Microsoft.
