Rodent-bashing 'Warhammer: Vermintide 2' promises to hit native 4K resolution on Xbox One X

A few months ago, a sequel to the popular Warhammer: Vermintide was announced for Xbox One and other platforms. The original game was somewhat of a surprise hit because it combined teamwork with satisfying melee combat. Players were enamored with the presentation and many were hoping for a continuation of the series.

Just like its predecessor, Warhammer: Vermintide 2 is a melee action game with co-op gameplay. You, along with three other players, have to battle seemingly endless hordes of enemies in a gothic setting. The title introduces the dark, bloody and twisted Chaos faction as the new enemy. We don't know much about them yet, but they're supposed to be utterly menacing from what the developer said so far. However, that doesn't mean you won't be slaughtering legions of them. Other new features include new careers, environments, and skill trees.

Aside from learning more about the gameplay, fans of the franchise have been curious about how the title will run on Xbox One X and PlayStation 4 Pro (PS4 Pro). Luckily, an interview between GamingBolt and Fatshark Producer Robert Bäckström revealed details about both versions. When asked a series of questions about the resolution and visuals, Bäckström said the following.

This is is something that we are still working on and can therefore change, but we will definitely get 4K support on the Xbox One X and 1440p native resolution on the PS4 Pro. Other than that, there are the inherited improvements that we get from the more powerful CPU which will give us a higher and steadier frame rate. We are also looking into the possibility to prioritize enhanced title players as hosts since their hardware will handle being a server much better... The Xbox One X will have native 4K resolution which the PS4 Pro is unable to attain... We will always output in 4K (Xbox One X) or 1440p (PS4 Pro) regardless of your TV. If you are on a non-4K TV set, it will downsample to whatever it supports. You will most likely still get a better visual experience than the non-enhanced versions. It is also worth mentioning that the game is not GPU bound so we don't get an increase in frame rate when lowering the rendering output.

It's great to see the developer pushing the Xbox One X version further given its two teraflops advantage over the PS4 Pro. Hopefully there will also be a 60 FPS mode but Fatshark didn't provide specifics. Barring any changes, the game should look crisp on a 4K display because there isn't any upscaling involved. Upscaling any image from 1440p resolution usually results in a blurry appearance.

The game will be available in Q1 2018, but we don't have an exact release date yet. Preorders are only open on Steam at the moment, but we'll update you as soon as they go live for Xbox One. Until then, be sure to check out the original because it also runs at native 4K resolution on Xbox One X.
